ORDRE MARTINISTE LIBRE (OML)

Originally Founded by PAPUS in 1887-91

Delegation for the United States, Canada and Haiti

ABOUT US

The purpose of the Ordre Martiniste Libre as determined originally by Louis Claude de Saint-Martin and Dr. Gerard Encausse (Papus) is Reintegration of humanity (past, present, and future) to the place it occupied before the fall into the material world, through individual Reconciliation. The immediate goal is the individual Reconciliation necessary to restore communication between man and the Divine. The communication severed at the prevarication of Adam.

“The Order as a whole is a school of Christian knighthood, endeavoring to develop the spirituality of its members by way of the study of the invisible world and its laws, by the exercise of devotion and intellectual assistance, and by the creation in each mind of a faith all the more solid because it is based upon observation and on science. Martinists do not do practice magic, neither white, nor black. They study, they pray, and they forgive”.

~Papus

“Books are the windows of the truth, but they are not the door; they point out things and yet they do not impart them. It is within that we should write, think, and speak, not merely on paper.”

~ Louis Claude de Saint-Martin

WELCOMING YOU ON THE PATH

The Ordre Martiniste Libre (OML) follows the footsteps and teachings of Louis Claude de Saint Martin, as well as the initiatory organization founded in 1887, by Dr. Gérard Encausse known also as “Papus”. The Martinist Order creates the necessary conditions to support and nurture Spiritual Seekers. The spiritual path is often difficult and lonely. This solitude is incumbent on every spiritual seeker because the “unfolding of being” or awakening is always personal and therefore singular. No one can walk the path for you, but we can walk with you. For this, the Martinist approach proposes group discourse, offers times and collective spaces to share and alleviate this impression of solitude inherent to the spirituality of the individual. These are educational activities. Within a Group, intellectual, philosophical, esoteric, comparative religion and mystical research is fostered by fraternal exchanges when we approach Knowledge from different points of view. The Martinist builds their knowledge while respecting the opinions of others.  They learn to give and to receive.

The North American Delegation of the OML

The North American Delegation of the OML is an initiatory non-profit organization which represents (in North America) the main jurisdiction of the Order in France. Its work is framed by its own initiatory and theurgical rituals.

The Order is non-dogmatic and teaches a spiritual pedagogy that is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition as interpreted by its masters coming from the spiritual and philosophical filiation of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin.

The OML also derives its origin from the Christian esoteric tradition, itself without fundamental contradiction with the primordial tradition. The OML follows in the footsteps and teaching of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin in the framework of the organization called “Martinist Order” which was founded in 1887 by Dr. Gérard Encausse (Papus ) and then renovated by his son (Dr. Philippe Encausse). The OML was chartered by Philippe Encausse himself, who gave the charge of its direction to the thaumaturgist and healer, Pierre Rispal, direct heir of the elixirs and relics of Master Philippe de Lyon.

Louis Claudede Saint Martin
“le Philosophe Inconnu”

The term “Martinism” is related to Louis Claude de Saint Martin (1743-1803). Louis Claude de Saint Martin wrote a number of books under the pen name “The Unknown Philosopher”, most of which are still available today. He was in fact a “theosopher”, comparable to Jacob Boehme, whom he considered to be his teacher, posthumously.  Click on this link here to read more about Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin.

Aims of the OML

The OML aims to assist its members to carry out the awakening and transformation of self, ranging from the man/woman of desire to the condition where the individual is being gradually released from the old attachments (dissipate the ephemeral and the artificial to let the depth of Being emerge). The progressive deepening of esoteric knowledge which, from the Primordial Tradition, opens up a dimension of spirituality which gives meaning to existence. The approach is practical, based on the study, research and exchange of knowledge, meditation, and prayer, both in a group and individually, and always inspired by humanistic values.

Dr. Gérard Encausse – “Papus”

Dr. Gérard Encausse (1865-1916) was a noted Physician and Spiritualist. He wrote under the pseudonym “Papus”. He founded the Independent Group for Esoteric Studies, which attracted a large number of students of the occult. He later directed and structured the Martinist Order, based on the teachings of Louis Claude de Saint-Martin.  Click on this link here to read more about Dr. Gérard Encausse (PAPUS).

The “Way of the Heart”

To Study, To Pray and To Forgive It is these that encompass the true dimension of what The Way of the Heart is all about. LOVE, in the highest sense of the term.It is indeed the “Way of the Heart” (a phrase invented by Papus to designate Martinism), or unitive way, which harmoniously combines the intellectual path, the path of feeling and that of action. The spiritual enlightenment of all men and women is the goal pursued by the OML. The method was transmitted to us through the teachings of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, updated and put into symbols by Papus. It can take forms adapted to our modern world (as well as the place that is influenced by the current culture) because, even if the letter can change by adapting to the needs of time and space, the spirit does not change. Click on this link here to read more about The Way of the Heart.

  Martinist Work

The first work of the Martinist is Reconciliation with himself, with others and with the transcendent source (whatever the name). Reconciliation is the realization of our distance from the Source and its consequences on Nature as well as in our relations with our fellow human beings. Reconciliation of the individual is the first step towards the “reintegration of the human race”. Reconciliation and Reintegration are fundamental terms in Martinist thought.

The OML offers its members a space created between the initiate and the symbol (the Martinist symbol) and the inner childbirth that takes place. The Order applies itself to creating the necessary conditions in order to support and nourish the initiate. The spiritual path is, very often, harsh, difficult and solitary. This loneliness belongs to every spiritual seeker because the “deployment of being,” which is always personal and therefore singular. For this, the Martinist approach proposes a sort of pooling, offering times and collective spaces to share and alleviate this impression of solitude inherent in the spirituality of the individual. These are the “Chapter” activities. Within a Chapter, intellectual, philosophical and mystical research is favored with fraternal exchanges when one approaches knowledge from different points of view. In this way, the Martinist supplements his knowledge, while respecting the opinions of others. He learns to receive and to give. Or, better yet, to give and to receive.

The Martinist Chapter

The Chapter proposes a philosophy, a mystical procedure and a method of working both individually and collectively. The main tools that the Chapter offers its members are:

  1.    Periodic virtual meetings via the internet (or by telephone) and ritual meetings in cities where a chapter is active (commonly a meeting for the celebration of solstices and equinoxes), under a specific ritual;

  2.    An initiation (staggered over several “degrees”) validating the entry into the chain of the Order and allowing for participation in the ritualistic meetings in the Chapters;

3.     Symbols and their study (in the form of reflection, meditation, etc.). The symbol can be seen as an external, perceptible form of an inner reality of spiritual, transcendent order.

The members of the OML work in a Chapter, during ritual meetings. The Chapters are composed of members from a wide variety of backgrounds.  In our community, age, knowledge and money are secondary values in relation to the qualities of the heart and the meaning and practice of fraternity. Chapters are small in size, which facilitates communication and a climate of peace and fraternity. In addition, these meetings allow exchanges and awareness that are difficult to be grasped by an isolated individual.

Chapters meetings are reserved for initiated members. Initiations are free and require the physical presence of the initiator and the initiate.

In exceptional circumstances, a member may be considered as “isolated.” This is particularly the case when physical presence is a problem because of the geographical distance of a city where a Chapter is active, or because other problems such as age or state of health may be of concern.  The isolated member must, however, come physically to a Chapter for any initiation.

Study and Discussion Groups Available In Person or Online.  Locations and times for both public meetings as well as open online or streamed discussions are made available to our members.

ORDRE MARTINISTE LIBRE (OML)

But de l’OML
